Broadway Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Broadway Wastewater Treatment Plant began construction in 1936 and became operational in 1938. Additions to the plant were done in 1940, 1950, 1954 and 1980. Major renovations began in 2010 and continue today with anticipated completion expected in 2013. The plant serves the downtown and North Beach ares of the City. Total area served is over 15,000 acres.
The plant is designed to treat 8.0 million gallons per day (MGD) average flow with a two hour peak of 40 MGD discharge permit limits are 20 milligrams per liter (mg/l) BOD5 and 20 mg/l TSS. The plant consistently meets the permit requirements and it averages below 6 mg/l BOD5 and 5 mg/l TSS. Presently, the plant treats about 5.0 MGD of domestic wastewater.
This plant has received gold and silver awards for peak performance since 1989. These awards are from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.
The existing Broadway Plant is manned sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. It is a two stage trickling filter plant with polishing filters and chlorine disinfection. About 3 dry tons of biosolids are processed per day, on average. The dewatered biosolids are transported to the City landfill for disposal. The new Broadway Treatment Plant that is under construction will use the activated sludge process with clarification and ultra-violet light disinfection. This facility operates under an authorized permit issued by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
