Qualifications for Firefighter Trainee

 


 

By becoming a Firefighter officer, you accept a tremendous responsibility in the community. Therefore, the requirements and training for the job are thorough. These qualifications include but are not limited to the list below:

 

Applicants must  have a valid driver's license upon filing an application and a valid Texas license before hiring and must have a driving record that reflects driving habits that are consistent with safe operation of a motor vehicle.

  • Applicants must not have a total of (2) or more moving violations convictions and/or accidents on your Motor Vehicle Driver’s Record within one (1) year of the date of  application.
  • Applicant must not have a total of three (3) moving violation convictions and/or at fault accidents in the past three (3) years of the date of application.
  • Applicant must not have had a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction within three years of the date of application.
  • An applicant whose license is suspended or revoked will not be eligible for consideration.

 

Must be at least a high school graduate or have received a certificate of equivalency for successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED).

An applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

 

Upon hiring, an applicant must reside within 60 minutes driving time from Corpus Christi.

 

Vision at least 20/100 in each eye correctable to 20/40. Normal color and peripheral vision.

 

Possess hearing with less than a 40-decibel loss in each ear.

 

Must meet the age requirements:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age by the date of the exam, and may not have reached their 36th birthday prior to being certified as eligible for a beginning position in the Department. 
  • The certification process is the date a conditional offer is made to the applicant. This could occur at any time within a year from the date of the entrance examination.

 

Has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor.

 

Has never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade B misdemeanor.

 

Has not had a Class B misdemeanor within the last 5 years from the date of court order.

 

Has never been convicted of any family violence offense.

 

Has never been convicted of a felony offense.

 

Is medically, physically, and psychologically fit to perform the essential duties of a firefighter.

 

Has not used marijuana within (1) year preceding the date of the application or any time during the selection process.

 

Has not used illegal controlled substance or dangerous drugs other than marijuana within three (3) years preceding the date of application or any time during the selection process.

 

Has not sold any illegal drugs.

 

Has not been discharged from any military service (if applicable) under less than honor conditions including, specifically;

  1. Under other than honorable conditions;
  2. Bad conduct;
  3. Dishonorable; or
  4. Any other characterization of service indicating bad character.

 

Must be of good moral character.

 

APPLICANT MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION MUST:

 

Score a minimum of 70% or higher on the written examination in order to progress to the physical fitness test.

 

Pass the physical fitness test.

 

Must complete and turn in the Personal History Statement within one (1) week of the Entrance Exam. The exact deadline will be communicated at the Entrance Exam.

 

The initial roster will be posted on www.cctexasjobs.com .  The roster will be only those that passed the written and physical fitness tests.  A cut-off score could be made at anytime prior to Oral Board Interviews.  Applicants that fall below the initial rosters cut-off score will not progress to the next stage.

 

Will not make any false statements of fact; be deceptive by statement or omission in the pre-screening application, interview, background investigation, and polygraph or by any means in any part of the selection process.

 

Must pass the Oral Board Interview.

 

50% of the written exam score (including vet points) and 50% of the Oral Board Score will determine the final roster.

 

Must pass the medical, psychological and drug testing prior to employment.

 

Must either possess a current paramedic certification issued by the Texas Department of Health or be able to obtain such certification within 18 months of employment through Fire Department sponsored training.  Must maintain paramedic certification for a minimum of eight (8) years as a condition of employment.

 

ATTENTION APPLICANTS WITH PRIOR MILITARY EXPERIENCE:

 

Only "Honorable" discharge will qualify the applicant for the five (5) veteran points (given to the applicant if they receive 70 or better on the Entrance exam). The Honorable discharge must have occurred prior to the entrance exam. "General (under honorable conditions)" allows the applicant to take the test, but is not eligible to receive veteran points. A copy of your DD-214 long form (member #4) must be received on or before the Entrance exam date in order to receive your veterans points.
