What is the starting salary?

Currently, the monthly salary for a Cadet ( Trainee ) in the Corpus Christi Fire Department is $2,979 monthly. After successfully completing the Academy, the starting salary for a Firefighter I is $45,672 annually.

 

What are the qualifications?

Must be at least 19 years of age by the date of the written exam, but must not be over 35 years of age prior to be certified as eligible for a beginning position. Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be a U.S. citizen.

 

How long does the Fire academy last?

The academy is for approximately one year. During this time, cadets receive training in both Fire and EMS subjects.

 

What is the hiring process?

All applicants must submit an online application at www.cctexasjobs.com . Applicants must successfully pass each step before proceeding in the recruitment process:

  • Written Examination
  • Physical Ability Test
  • Background Investigation
  • Oral Board Interviews
  • Psychological Examination
  • Pre-employment medical, physical, and drug testing

 

All potential candidates may be required to take a polygraph examination.

 

What are the Firefighters' working hours?

While in the academy, cadets' normal hours are from 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Upon graduation from the academy, Firefighters work a 24 hour shift on and 48 hours off.

 

What benefits are offered?

The City of Corpus Christi provides health and life coverage for the employee and 50% of dependent coverage. Trainees begin immediate participation in the Firefighters Retirement System. Upon graduation from the Academy, the City provides the initial uniform and a monthly allowance after that for upkeep. Cadets earn 15 days sick leave, 15 days vacation, and 7 paid holidays per year. There is also additional incentive pay for applicable certifications and college hours.

 

What does the written exam consist of?

The exam consists of general knowledge such as reading, math, interpersonal skills, teamwork, commitment, honesty, integrity, and emotional stability. There are approximately 100 questions and must be taken within 2 ½ hours. There is NOT a study guide for this exam.

 

Are there any residency requirements?

Firefighters may live outside the city limits, but must reside in such a location as to be able to reach City Hall within 60 minutes by traveling by automobile at posted speeds in ordinary weekday traffic.

 

Do I get extra points if I served in the military?

If you served in the military and received an honorable discharge, you will be eligible for five (5) extra points on the written exam with a score of 70 or better.

 

What does the physical fitness test consist of?

The test consists of four (4) events:

  • 300 meter run (66 seconds)
  • Push-ups (22, no time limit)
  • Sit-ups (25, under 1 minute)
  • 1.5 mile run (15 minutes, 37seconds)

 

What are the physical demands of firefighting?

The physical demands are vigorous. Firefighters are called upon to perform hazardous tasks requiring strenuous exertion under emergency conditions. Often, these tasks are performed in a hostile environment such as smoke, extreme heat, toxic gases, and confined spaces.

 

Can I still apply if I am in the military reserve?

Yes, although you may have to speak with your commanding officer through the proper channels for any modifications made to your military commitment.
