Behavior Training and Tips
We want your home to be the forever home that your new pet dreams of and deserves. We understand that having a new pet, means you may have questions that we can’t always help you with. The ASPCA has a new virtual pet behavior program that allows you to ask those important questions 24hrs a day. To check it out, please go to the ASPCA website.
Yes, animals are available for adoption! Each day Animal Care Services impounds stray animals and owner surrendered pets. These animals come from various backgrounds. Sometimes they come to us injured, sick, mistreated, and scared. Because of this, we cannot warrant health, temperament, or age of any animal. Our goal is to locate new and loving homes for all adoptable animals.
All animals are evaluated for adoptability upon intake. Adult animals that are impounded as strays are held for a minimum of 3 days commencing on the first day after impoundment. Animals with a collar or appear to be owned are held for 5 days, to allow the owner time to reclaim the animal. Once the required time is up, and the animal is a candidate for adoption, it is then placed up for adoption or placed with a rescue. We encourage all 501c3 rescues to become our placement partner.
Owner surrendered animals that are good candidates for adoption are immediately available for adoption.
People interested in adopting an animal are encouraged to visit the shelter. Some animals can go home right away, where others must be held for a few days. All animals that are available for adoption are accessible to the public for viewing. A representative selection of animals in the kennel can be viewed at our Facebook page.
Most dogs and cats adopted from the Animal Care Services will be spay/neutered prior to the adopter taking the animal home. Sometimes due to age, weight or illness, we must reschedule the animal to come back at a later date for surgery. This service is included in the adoption fee.
Upon adoption and within 3 business days, the animal should be taken to a licensed veterinarian for a thorough examination. Upon adoption, you will receive a coupon for a free exam by a local veterinarian. We encourage you to have a relationship with a local veterinarian to manage the health of your new pet.
If an animal is found to be ill and the new owner wishes to return it they may, with written proof of illness from the veterinarian. The adoption fee is not refundable, but you will receive a voucher of credit to adopt a new pet within 12 months.
Please keep in mind that as a municipal animal shelter, we have very few indications as to which kinds of pets will arrive at any given time and the best selections go home the fastest. Please visit our shelter early and often to find the pet you are looking for.
PLEASE, never adopt a companion animal on an impulse. Having a pet is a full-time responsibility, as well as a financial commitment. Make sure that you as well as every member of your family is ready, willing and able to take on the obligations associated with pet ownership, give careful thought to the kind of pet that would be best-suited for your home and then come and visit our shelter.
If you are interested in adopting any of our animals, you must visit the shelter to complete an adoption application for the animal you are interested in. In the event multiple applications are received on a specific animal, whomever visits the shelter and completes payment will be the individual who will receive the animal. In the event, after payment is made, the perspective adopter decides to not adopt the animal, the adopter may select a different animal or apply their payment as a sponsorship for another animal. No refunds will be given.
Become an Adoption Placement Partner
Each year thousands of homeless animals are rescued from the streets of Corpus Christi, or given up by their owners. It is through community networking and the generosity of volunteers and rescue organizations that many of these animals receive second chances. We encourage all 501c3 organizations to become Placement Partners with the City of Corpus Christi. For assistance regarding the registration of your animal rescue/placement organization, please contact Danni Alcantara at 361-826-1304 or email email@example.com. Agreement forms may be faxed to 361-826-4611.
