The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District reports they have received confirmation of a H1N1 flu related death of a Nueces County resident. The Corpus Christi resident died at a local hospital on Friday evening, April 2.
Annette Rodriguez, Health District Director, said the local resident was between the ages of 25-40 years old and was hospitalized on March 31.
The man did have other underlying medical conditions.
For confidentiality and personal privacy reasons the Health District will not be releasing or confirming any additional identifying information.
The recent death marks the eleventh H1N1 death in Nueces County since the first H1N1 confirmed death was reported in May 2009.
Dr. William Burgin, Jr., Local Health Authority, stated "H1N1 flu vaccination is by far the most important step in protecting your family and yourself against flu infection."
Dr. Burgin advises residents should not let their guard down against the H1N1 flu and states everyone eligible should get vaccinated as soon as possible and continue to follow hygiene practices.
Residents should follow these standard precautions to reduce the spread of any respiratory illness:
Practice good handwashing hygiene. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water or use an alchohol-based hand sanitizer.
Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others, and seek medical attention.
Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues.
Get your flu shot this year, both the "seasonal flu" and the H1N1 flu vaccines when they become available.

Swine Flu Update
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District continues to monitor and investigate the H1N1 Flu Virus (referred to as "Swine Flu" initially) activity in Nueces County. Keeping the community informed is a top priority for health officials and public health staff.
The Health District is advising Nueces County residents to continue to do what they can to prevent the spread of the H1N1 Flu Virus.
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District would like to thank the residents of Corpus Christi and surrounding cities in Nueces County for their patience and understanding as we continue to deal with the H1N1 (Swine) Flu Virus. We are working diligently to prevent the spread of illnesses in Nueces County, while continuing to provide our regular services to residents. Please be aware there may be some temporary interruptions in these services in order for Health District staff to respond to immediate needs, such as administering vaccinations for Nueces County residents.
Due to recent changes in reporting requirements by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Health District will no longer be reporting the number of confirmed cases of H1N1 (Swine) Flu.
Surveillance requirements will be death investigations only, which we will continue to report.
As of the week of November 9, 2009, CDC H1N1 deaths reporting has reverted back to tracking the number of H1N1 death investigations since the beginning of the outbreak. The first H1N1 death in Nueces County was reported in May 2009.
