Cole Park Pier has suffered from aging infrastructure, having sustained an impact from Hurricane Harvey and erosion that results from salt water conditions in the Gulf. Damage to the piers is so significant that it has been determined that the piers need to be demolished and rebuilt. There may also be ADA (American Disability Act) compliance issues with the way the pier was constructed in 1972. There are visible cracks in the concrete, when viewing the pier from the underside or from the side.
